Mondays. They are the symbolic thorn in the backsides of everyone in the galaxy. But they are also a necessary evil to start the week off right and get things done that you couldn’t do during the weekend. With this in mind, Mondays are a good thing, but what if you find out that you wont be spending it alone? In enters the School’s-Off-Mondays.
Ugh…
I set it up to have one of my son’s friends over and thought they could play outside while I got to hack away at my check list. Do you know what’s worse then School’s-Off-Mondays?
The answer is School’s-Off-Rainy-Mondays.
As much as I love video games I don’t like to have my son and his friends veg-out in front of a gaming system for hours on end, so I started to talk to them about a play fort.
Ahhh, play forts…remember those? My brothers and I would channel our favorite superheros and pretend we were just your friendly neighborhood kids, until we heard the distant rumbles of a sinister menace bothering our little town. Then, with a flick of a trophy sitting on the mantle, PRESTO-CHANGE-O our living room would became a play fort, complete with the latest 80’s computer technology and ninja weapons.
We took some notes from Spider-Man and his amazing friends…
After a little explanation, the kids got to work setting up their play fort with piles of pillows and maneuvering around furniture. That’s my son saying, “time to go, mom, we will call you down when we are done.”
I went up the stairs and quickly started working on my check list. I thought this new venture would only preoccupy the kids for about 30 minutes, but to my surprise they were content all morning! When it was lunchtime, the boys quickly scarfed down their food only to go right back downstairs to finish their fort. I finally got “permission” to check out their progress. As I walked down the stairs, I beheld a glorious quilted metropolis with flashlights flickers and giggles from within.
The superheros of this fort wanted me to test out their “Ninja Robot” facility. As I crawled through, it really brought me back to when I was a kid during my make-believe adventures. The two pals spent all of their playtime on this and it was so sweet to capture their smiles afterward.
I was also able to get my task list completely done. Phew!
Shortly after, it was time for my son’s friend to leave, so I had tasked them to clean up the fort and put away everything.
I believe it was at this point that I became the sinister menace…
