Today is my birthday and the view from the other side of the hill is most glorious! Elmo’s meme says it all.
I thought it would be fun to re-post some of an old blog I wrote for Runitlikeamom, in 2015.
That’s me, coming home from the hospital with my dad. He is holding up my very first birthday gift, that he made for me, and I still have it today.
If you were to have asked my mom how I came into the world, she would have told you that it was by a doctor running late from a Christmas party. A cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other, he strolls in, puts down his vices and delivers me, within the hour, of December 28th, 1977.
I fall right smack in the middle of two big holidays, Christmas and New Years. Being born around this time of year I am considered a holiday baby. It is a rite of passage, and it requires a set of tough skins to be one. In some cases, literally, due to the majority of the time I’m celebrating a birthday during a snow storm.
Are there any another holiday babies out there? Raise your hand. No really, don’t be shy, raise it high in the office, so even that weird guy over in accounting can see you. Be proud of your title! And, now its time for the top five things that us holiday babies can relate to.
You know you are a holiday baby when:
~ Another closet is needed to store all your sweater gifts.
~ Receiving birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper is totally normal.
~ Blizzards and birthday parties are not fun (thanks Winter Miser).
~ Nothing says your birthday better than a Christmas ornament.
~ The dreaded Christmas/Birthday combo gift. Enough said.
I joke about my birthday, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I have since found many holiday babies, over the years, and we now laugh together about our similar birthday experiences. I also have realized that there are friends and family that go so above and beyond to celebrate along side me during this incredibly busy time of year, and I am so thankful for them - for all of them.
So, what have I done for my on-the-other-side-of-the-hill birthday you ask?
Yes, I’m adulting so hard right now and I joke, but since I am “all grown up” I don’t need to wait for the blizzard to stop or the mountain of birthday sweaters to start to celebrate. I can have my own #geekmom birthday fun!
Well, almost…
I just got back from a very happy birthday physical therapy session, this morning, because I’m “all grown up” and my joints are old and breaking (unlike).
My fingers are crossed on getting out to the trails, regularly, in the spring — but all in due time.
Lastly, I wanted to bring up the Facebook Happy Birthday wish extravaganza we all get on our special day, every year. I have just received my most favorite.
Steve, thank you for the raddest, most geekiest, MOST EPIC BIRTHDAY VIDEO EVERRRR! My face just melted off.
